woman dental pain Little do many know, you have a time constraint when it comes to saving your teeth during a dental emergency. In fact, many people may not know how to save their teeth at all when faced with a dental emergency. If you’re not sure how to handle these dental accidents, your emergency dentist in Powell is here to help you through them every step of the way.

Saving Your Smile in Less Than an Hour

One of the most common dental emergencies is a knocked-out tooth. To save your natural tooth, you must take the right steps to preserve it in order to have it placed back by your dental professionals. Here are the steps to save your lost tooth in a dental emergency:

1.     Pick up the tooth from the chewing surface and NOT the root.

To save your tooth, you must retrieve it of course. Be sure to handle the tooth carefully when you pick it up by the crown and not the root that’s normally beneath the gum line.

2.     Rinse the tooth with water.

Use only water to gently rinse off any dirt or debris on the tooth. Do not use soap or chemicals and don’t scrub the tooth as you want to keep all the soft tissues attached to it in place.

3.     Try to place the tooth in the socket if you can.

Gently push the tooth with your fingers by holding it by the crown. Position it above the socket and close your mouth slowly. Hold the tooth in place with your fingers or by gently biting down on it. If you can’t fit it correctly, you should never force the tooth in place.

4.     Keep your tooth moist if you can’t fit it in the socket.

It’s important to keep the tooth moist so that it doesn’t become brittle. If it can’t be replaced in the socket, put it in milk to preserve the tooth’s life.

5.     Be sure to get to your dentist right away.

Your tooth only has so long to survive when it’s not attached to your mouth’s soft tissues. After prepping your tooth with the steps listed above, be sure to get to your dental office as soon as possible so your dentist can help you restore your smile.
